The dark depths of winter is approaching,or maybe it is upon us.You can tell because the Dairy Godmother is closing from January 10th until February 10th.Lucky for us here in Alexandria, that’s about the length of winter and we can tell it’s spring when the Dairy Godmother reopens!

The darkness of winter is a wonderful time for reflection and mental rest we all need. Soon we will be as busy and frenetic as always.Let’s think about where we have been and where we are going.Let’s be mindful.

I am filled with gratitude for all the support you have given us over the years. You allowed me to support my kids, send them to college and live in a safe place. TCWilliams gave them a great eduction(thanks Alexandria). I am truly grateful.

This is the part where I remind you that we will reopen for Super Bowl Sunday if the Packers play. Things look pretty good right now but I hate to be cocky like some. If that happens, first of all,you need to watch this space, and Twitter and Facebook for plenty of bragging and posturing. Then on February 5th The Frozen Tundra FOTD will return to Del Ray as well as the take home brat kits that we had last year.

I will be around part of the time if you see me working inside the shop. If your dog needs puppy pops to get by,you can email me and set up a time to meet here. I get it.

Hopefully, we will see you before January 10th!

Happy New Year!

2012 is fast approaching, and we here at the Dairy Godmother are prepared!

On the 31st of December we’ll be open from 11 a.m. ’til 7 p.m. so you can pick up some treats early and everyone can party it up that night. The special treats we have for the last night of the year include the French Kiss custard, which is Chocolate custard with crispy French Meringue tossed in, Starry Night cakes of Chocolate with White Chocolate chunks, and boxes of decadent Champagne sorbet truffles, dusted with gold and ready to ring in the new year!

A new specialty this year are our New Year’s Brunch Pops! From the whimsy-filled mind of our prodigious and ever-diligent friend Liz comes bags of 5 mini-pops in such popular January 1st flavors as Mimosa, Bloody Mary, and Pink Grapefruit. The pops’ small size makes them great for just a taste of Dairy Godmother, and flavors are bagged separately to preserve each type’s unique flavor.

As a friendly reminder, we will be CLOSED for January 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in order to sleep in, so get your tasty New Year’s morsels in hand before 2011 is out!

Sorry, we are no longer accepting special orders! Have a great holiday season. We still have our regular pre-made items available for sale at the stop.

As the festive season comes into full swing, don’t forget about those sweet treats for your family and guests! We’ll still have our usual Vanilla and Chocolate Wisconsin-style Frozen Custard every day (except Tuesdays, when we’re closed), but the special Flavors of the Day are more nuanced than the Summer ones. Click the “Flavor Forecast“ link to see just what tasty and interesting Fall flavors we have in store!

Pumpkin Custard Pie with Pepitas

With the start of November we’re all reminded that Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and as many of you know that means extra-special fancy treats! On the week of Thanksgiving (21st-24th) we will be open noon-9 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and from 9-noon Thursday. Available on a first come, first served basis that week will be Mozambique, Sweet Potato-Pecan, and Pumpkin custards and Cranberry, Pear Vanilla, and Apple Cider sorbets in pint and quart sizes, as well as Pumpkin Moon Pies, Ice Pops, boxes of Truffles or Marshmallows, and more Pumpkin on Ginger sandwiches. Again this year we are also offering several types of delights for pre-order; just come down to the shop or call and we’ll put you on the list for pick-up between the 21st and the 24th. Custard Pies come in Pumpkin or Sweet Potato-Pecan flavors in a ginger snap crust. Pilgrim Cakes have vanilla custard and cranberry sorbet between layers of spice cake. Boxes of Chocolate-Dipped Gelato and Sorbet Truffles or assorted Marshmallows are great for lighter desserts, and Pumpkin on Ginger custard sandwiches are a big hit, too!

Read the Thanksgiving Treats 2011 flyer! You can email us your order.

All sorts of cookies are available in the shop every day, like Marshmallows, Oaties, Ginger-Molasses cookies, Macaroons, Buttered Pecans, and the old standby Chocolate Chip! Be on the lookout for even fancier treats like Pumpkin Moon Pies or Hazelnut Shortbreads, since they go fast when we make them! We also have some of the more delicate Sorbets this time of year when the shop is less crowded. As of October 31st we have Pear Vanilla, Blackberry Merlot, Apple Cider, and Lemon Lavender, and Rose Hip – Hibiscus.

One of the more subtle changes this year is to the Website itself. Our tech-savvy webmaster Alex has been hard at work making the site more smartphone friendly, so get out there and give it a try! Look for us on Facebook and Twitter, too; there are plenty of ways to find that flavor!

Even though the sun’s not so hot, we still have a wide assortment of our Pop Culture! exotic, made-right-here ice pops available. Right now (10/31) we have Tangerine, Rum Raisin, Caramel Apple, Pomegranate, Cranberry Relish, and a Peanut Butter and Jelly pop made with local Concord Grapes! Also, Frozen Custard Cakes are still available all the time for special occasions! We usually have some around for Walk-Ins, but if you’re planning ahead for a cakey event, you can shoot us an email to reserve a cake and have us write your message on it!

We will be CLOSED on Friday the 25th of November, likely at home napping and eating turkey sandwiches. Spend some time with your folks and we’ll see you on Saturday!

The return of the Cookie Case is a big deal in Del Ray, and it brings many boons. Who doesn’t like Marshmallows, Oaties, Ginger-Molasses cookies, Macaroons, Buttered Pecans, and the old standby Chocolate Chip? Be on the lookout for even fancier treats like Pumpkin Moon Pies or Hazelnut Shortbreads, since they go fast when we make them! We also have some of the more delicate Sorbets this time of year when the shop is less crowded. As of October 12th we have Pear Vanilla, Blackberry Merlot, Apple Cider, and Lime Mint.

Right now we have, among others: Boysenberry, Blueberry Lavender Cream, Pineapple 5 Spice, and a Peanut Butter and Jelly pop made with local Concord Grapes! Also, Frozen Custard Cakes are still available all the time for special occasions!
We at the Dairy Godmother just love our dogs, so we bring home some crunchy whole wheat and barley Squirrels and plenty of frozen Puppy Pops. Did you know that many of the pops are made by students at St. Coletta’s school? AND that some proceeds from Puppy Pop sales go to the PAL organization of therapy animals? Well, now you do!

Mark your calendar and bring a costume to the ever-popular 15th Annual Del Ray Halloween Parade on Sunday the 30th. Remember, the Avenue will be blocked off that afternoon, so there will be no parking out front. Lastly, don’t forget to visit Del Ray for the weekly Del Ray Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings (8am – noon) all year round for local produce and goodies!
