Winter Holidays, 11/28/2006

I had a sad moment this week.

I'm not an especially materialistic person. My house is very small, I have only one purse,I just got a cell phone. Even so, I cried when I lost a posession this week.

It was the cookie cutter I use to make the lavender shortbread.I got it about 25 years ago,I'm not sure how it came to me. I have used it at every restaurant I ever worked at. My kids used to call it the peanut cutter for the slight bulbousness of the ends.I used it to make cookies with it when I was staying at home with them instead of baking away.I have moved  many times and managed to hang onto it.I have never seen another one like it.

I traced the last cookie on paper with a pencil so I can see if I can get a tin smith to make me another one some day. I now have three ancient graphite lined cookies in zip bag on my table that I am afraid to throw away for fear I will never see their like again.

I just can't imagine the lavender shortbreads without their special shape,so I won't be making them for awhile....not until a decent period of mourning has passed.
