My Italian Trip, 01/29/2005

Bon giourno!

I had a fascinating trip through gelato land but I couldn't be happier to be back!

I a nutshell..........here are some new flavors we won't be trying.

Octopus,celery,carrot,smoked provelone,aloe vera,garlic,melon w/proscuitto,sage,rosemary and olive oil

Highlights:

Professional Culinary-Gelateria Vestry in Florence-Best gelato and ambience

Best Meal-Il Latini in Florence-Fabulous traditional Tuscan food and a trip to the wine cellar

Best bite-Pumpkin pizza in Naples-paper thin, wood baked, chunky pureed fresh Italian(a little different)pumpkin, roasted red pepper and buffulo mozzerella.

Best Italian Fashion tip-Wear a scarf everyday

Best personal fashion purchase-Black leather knee boots

Best Purchase Overall-CD of Ancient Roman music played on authentically reproduced ancient string instuments

Revelation-getting to see real bergamot oranges after years of drinking Earl Grey tea

Best Surprise-Vesuvius covered with snow!

Second Best Surprise-Accordian players on the streets!

Moment of Personal Pride-getting out and about on foot and public transport to see the sights on Naples on my own

Most Moving Moment-Seeing for myself the Ancient Art of Pompeii and Heculenium after reading about it for so many years.

Moment of Gratitude-Walking the mile from the hotel to take the train to Herculenium and giving a coin to every begger and a peice of bread to every stray dog.I am so fortunate.

Overall Revelation- I'm not so far off here at the DRD of doing a very good job. In particular,my sorbets are better than any I tasted there.

Lowlights:

Spending two days with my head inside of an Italian toilet after eating a bad peice of Torta Nona.

The value of the dollar.

Both of which pale in comparison to the pleasure and education I received on this wonderful trip.Thank you for patronage and patience in my being closed. It allowed me to go on this life enhancing treasure.

                                        Love,

                                                     Liz

We're glad you're back, safe, sound and refreshed!

No smoked provelone custard? I don't know, it sounds promising. . . and you've got a cheese shop in town now, too!

We will see you soon!

Ben tornata! Saro' molto contenta di venire giovedi per mangiare una "salsiccia Wisconsinese" e non vedo l'ora di provare uno dei nuovi gelati. In short...I am so happy that That Custard Place in Del Ray will be open again this week. Of course, I envied you every single moment that you were in my beloved Italy.

Hi Liz! Great summarization of the trip! Sorry I didn't get to say "arrivederci" at the airport, we all scattered in different directions after going through customs. I visited the custard cam...Elvis lives and he's robbing your shop! There's a strange man in a gold jacket standing in front of an empty cash register! Love your website! Ciao for now! Ed.
